Hymns - Out of Eden

04-07-2005 03:04

Psalm 23 speaks of the comforting nature of God as our shepherd.

Psalm 23 speaks of the comforting nature of God as our shepherd. Oft quoted and used for scripture memorization, this passage provides a wonderful picture of all the ways that God provides for us. The great shepherd gives us rest to restore our soul, prepares us food and nourishment, teaches us to be righteous, grants us His blessing and protects us from evil. It's a beautiful song that reminds us that God loves us and will never leave us.

Out of Eden adds to the growing collection of revamped hymn albums with their latest recording, aptly titled, Hymns. Out of Eden have made quite a name for themselves in the last eleven years of their career, resulting in five albums that maintained and grew their listening audience with a mix of urban-edged pop music and ballads. With such a well planned past, it's natural for the group to want to branch out in a new direction. However, it's also a risky move and unfortunately it lands the trio on shaky ground.

Opening with "Fairest Lord Jesus," which sounds more like a rendition from Point of Grace than Out of Eden, Hymns begins slowly and never quite recovers. All but gone is the distinctive r&b vibe in lieu of a calmer more subdued sound that aims to appeal to an adult contemporary market, but at times leaves the listener bored. Exceptions to this rule include the subtle jam "I Know Whom I Have Believed," which showcases Out of Eden's strong urban groove and "Vision of Love" which consists of a jazzy, funky rhythmic hook and solid vocals.

The album focuses on the compassion and comfort that God offers as described in Psalm twenty-three, "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place" points out the 'green pastures.' "God Will Take Care of You" guides the listener to think about all He provides and "Better Is One Day," though a horrible inclusion, speaks of the promise of 'dwelling in te house of the Lord forever,' which closes the passage. Also present thematically is the acknowledgement of God's splendor, love, and mercy ("Fairest Lord Jesus","Praise to the Lord Almighty","Be Still My Soul").

While the Twenty-third Psalm is one of the most memorable sections of scripture, Hymns, which highlights many of the chapter's key points, is largely forgettable.
